Metamorphosis at Middle Temple
This is Lucy’s second solo show at Middle Temple, and is a response to the plants in all of our gardens. The name stems from a book by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe “The Metamorphosis of Plants” Although more famous for writing Faust, over 5 decades Goethe undertook scientific research into the natural world.
He was interested in finding a single unifying factor in plants; the archetype plant. The concept of metamorphosis came to him whilst walking in Palmero.
“it came to me in a flash that in the organ of the plant which we are accustomed to call the leaf lies the true Proteus who can hide and reveal himself in all vegetal forms. From first to last the plant is nothing but leaf” Goethe
This dynamic “leaf” progresses through different forms of cotyledons, stem leaves, sepals, petals, stamens, it is this which he referred to as metamorphosis.
